Hanging Picture Frames Like a Pro

Drawing of D-ring and picture hooks

Framing is something that is worth the investment — in your art, your memories, and in your style. Hanging it? That should feel just as thoughtful, but way less complicated. So here is the deal, I have made a no-nonsense cheat sheet just for you, so that you can get it right the first time.

Ready?!

Do: Use Two Hooks:

Always use two points of contact when hanging artwork—especially with wire and D-rings. Placing your hooks about a third of the way in from each side ensures greater stability and prevents the frame from shifting or falling. This is particularly important for anything heavier than the lightest paper prints. Using two hooks distributes the weight more evenly across the wall, reducing the risk of the artwork tilting or the hook pulling out. Think of it as giving your art a solid foundation with two reliable anchors instead of just one; much more stable and secure.

Don’t: Trust Just One Hook:

Even if it feels secure, a single hook is more likely to twist, tilt, or fail. Avoid the heartbreak; and go with two.

Do: Check the Weight

Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • Up to 10 lbs – Small photo frames? Easy. Most hooks will do.

  • Up to 30 lbs – Use heavy-duty picture hooks with wire and D-rings.

  • Up to 50 lbs – Time to double up on everything. Larger pieces may even need cleats.

  • Heavier than 50 lbs? Let the pros step in — we’ve got you. ( Crestar offers installation help!)

Don’t: Ignore the Warning Signs

If your frame is tilting, joints are separating, or the glass is pushing out, that’s your art crying for help. Shadow boxes are especially sensitive. Don’t panic — many frames can be repaired, rejoined, or saved with a simple hardware switch.

Do: Inspect Before & After Hanging

Make sure the wire is tight, the hooks are level, and the wall type (drywall, plaster, brick) matches the hardware you’re using. Periodically check for loosening over time, especially in high-humidity or high-traffic areas.
